One of the most underappreciated comedic elements in an anime has to be the anime weight gain. This is a phenomenon when a character in an anime gains a significant amount of noticeable weight, usually as a result of overeating. And no, we don’t mean those skinny anime girls who complain about gaining weight when it’s in their boobs!
Everyone usually complains about gaining weight, but who doesn’t like to see their favorite anime characters get a little chubby, even if it’s only for a short while? Anime weight gain can be funny for some while others find it moe! This is for all you anime fans out there that love the anime weight gain! Let us check out the anime characters who rock the chubby look. Here’s our list for top 10 anime weight gain!

Is there no character who thinks he can 1-up Sakamoto the way Yuuya can? Yes, Sakamoto Desu Ga? is a new anime on the market, but right off the bat, it has provided us with #10 on our list of top 10 anime weight gain. Yuuya is a teen model with looks and charisma, but his obsession with Sakamoto is just not healthy. It’s caused our teenage heartthrob to gain a pound—or twenty! “Quirks” are super powers that manifest in 80% of humans allowing them to perform supernatural abilities. Midoriya Izuku is a child of parents both possessing quirks, but discovers that he is part of the 20% that does not have a quirk. Heartbroken but determined, Izuku is working hard so that he can one day become a hero. One day, Izuku comes across his idol, All Might. All Might’s quirk has been a secret, but he tells Izuku that his quirk is an inherited ability and he has chosen Izuku to be his successor! After a lot of back breaking training, Izuku is ready to inherit the ability and attend UA High, a high school known for its hero program. Izuku’s dreams may come true, but what he doesn’t know is that there is a villainous organization that will put his power to the test.
It’s such a subtle transformation, but Izuku’s mother made it on our list as #9 for anime weight gain. When Izuku was a child, Izuku’s mother was more slender, but we see, quite subtly, that she has gained a bit of weight since we first saw here and is an adorable chubby anime woman! Perhaps it is due to her preoccupation with her role as a mother or she’s getting older, but there is no doubt that Izuku’s mother is one adorable chubby anime girl so you know she deserves a place on our list!

Saying Shinobu is eccentric is merely the tip of the iceberg. In the last episodes of Chihayafuru. At the end of Chihayafuru, Shinobu has gained a few kilograms. Why? Shinobu just had to have a special Snowmaru novelty item so she ate copious amounts of ice cream to get them. Shinobu is a girl who knows what she wants and goes after it. This anime weight gain may have cost Shinobu her match, but it goes to show you that there are more important things than physical appearance. Don’t you think Shinobu was cute when she was chubby?

Sakata Gintoki continues on with the life of a samurai, although you’d never expect it with his love of strawberry milk and Jump. Or maybe not… These three are always finding trouble in the oddest ways from riots to assassinations, but they’ll continue on doing odd jobs.
Kagura is one special cheongsam-clad girl with a bottomless stomach. Kagura eats endlessly, yet there are moments when even she can gain weight! Kagura can become massive, but does she care? Nope. Kagura just owns it and uses it to her advantage, which usually means annoying her friends. When you’ve got it, have fun with it. Gintama teaches us these important lessons every week.

Azuma Kazuma has had a love of bread since he was six, when his sister took him to a bakery to show him the wonders of bread, since their grandfather refused to allow them to have bread for breakfast. The owner of the bakery discovers that Kazuma has the “Hands of the Sun” which are perfect for making bread. The owner leaves to pursue his dreams of making a Japanese bread while Kazuma stays home to start his own dream.
In episode 52, Pierrot goes back in time only to discover that since the pregnancy, his mother, the queen has had some serious anime weight gain. The queen’s weight gain was a result of gross overeating. Moral of the story? Babies make you fat! Just kidding. Queens can have some anime weight gain, too, so act like a queen!

Kasumi Fuu is a clumsy girl who works at a Japanese teahouse. One day, Fuu is being harassed by a group of samurai that she accidently spilled a drink on. Mugen steps in to end the harassment without any issue, but then, Mugen decides he wants to fight Jin, a ronin. Although Jin is unwilling, the two get into a fight so chaotic that they destroy the teahouse and kill the magistrate’s son. Now, the two are arrested and scheduled to be executed. That is until Fuu rescues them in exchange for their services as her bodyguard so that she can go off and find the samurai who smells of sunflowers. Together, this unlikely trio will set off on a journey to find the sunflower samurai—if they don’t kill each other first.
Fuu is cute, quirky, and kind of bad luck, but damn if she isn’t a bottomless pit! Unfortunately for Fuu, her metabolism needs to catch up to her appetite. Fuu makes it on our list because of her massive anime weight gain! Don’t worry though; Fuu uses her weight gain to her advantage no matter what the situation. It just goes to show you that being chubby has its positives! It’s too bad Fuu does go back to normal eventually.

Yuugo just doesn’t have the talent, but he’s going to try!
Although Tamako is usually larger in size, Tamako has the ability to lose weight and gain weight with ease. Tamako has shown that she can be quite the bishoujo when she loses weight, something people would envy, but Tamako dumbfounds us by how quickly she is able to gain weight! However, Tamako shows us that it’s a healthy decision to keep away from anemia. See, you don’t have to think that being chubby is a bad thing. Clearly, Tamako likes it and owns her anime weight gain!

Natsu is one of the lucky ones who needs that energy so that he can kick butt and cause trouble. Isn’t that what he does best? That or fight with Gray.

Panty and Stocky, also known as the Anarchy Sisters, are two bad ass angels who have been kicked out of Heaven. Now Panty and Stocking are having a blast in limbo between Heaven and Earth. Panty loves sex while Stocking has a thing for Sweets. Together with their afro man, Garter Belt, they’re painting Daten City with bodily fluids. These two have endless debauchery planned and no one stands a chance against Panty and Stocking!
When Stocking becomes the victim of a fiendish ghost, Stocking finds herself gaining a little weight. We get to see her run herself ragged to lose weight, only to give up and binge excessively on cakes! Stocking may be cute and full of sweets, but if there’s something episode 4 of Panty & Stocking with Garter Belt teaches us, it’s that we’re fine just the way we are. Maybe it’s a ghost trying to ruin our lives!

Yukihira Souma has long worked by his father’s side at the family restaurant, but one day, he dreams of becoming skilled enough to take over in his father’s stead. In the process, Souma likes to try out new and creative dishes on his friends to help develop his skills more. One day, Souma’s father announces that he wants to close the restaurant so that he can work on his skills at restaurants around the world. He gives Souma the challenge of graduating Totsuki Culinary Academy, where only 10 percent of students graduate. Souma is not interested at first, but then he learns about the “shokugeki” which is a high-stakes culinary battle.
Many may want to argue that Isami is already chubby, but is he really? In the summer, Isami is very lean, but later in the year, he gains weight, mainly as a result of his need, as a chef, to taste everything he prepares. Which Isami is the real Isami: the summer Isami or the Isami in the other 3 seasons? Who knows, but you cannot deny that his anime weight gain is pretty funny and perhaps, one of the more logical ones in anime. Who doesn’t lose weight in hot and humid weather?
Final Thoughts
Anime weight gain is a fun element in an anime that is great for comedy, but it’s just too underutilized and underappreciated. Not all anime characters are skinny!
